Dewi 'Dee' Lestari Simangunsong (born 20 January 1976 in Bandung, West Java) is an Indonesian writer, singer, and songwriter.
Biography[edit]
Dee was born in Bandung, West Java on 20 January 1976;[1] she was the fourth of five children born to a religious Christian family.[1][2] Raised to be active in music, she took up singing, later providing backing vocals for singers such as Chrisye.[2] After graduating high school, she attended Parahyangan Catholic University and graduated with a degree in international relations.[1] In 1993, she formed the girl group RSD (Rida Sita Dewi) with her friends Rida Farida and Sita Nursanti; together they released three albums and a greatest hits album on Warna Musik and Sony Music.[2]
In 2001, Dee released her first novel, Kesatria, Putri dan Bintang Jatuh (The Knight, The Princess, and the Falling Star). Part of the Supernova series,[1] it was well received and spawned two sequels, Supernova: Akar (Supernova: Roots) and Petir (Thunder).[1] Two of these were nominated for the Khatulistiwa Award, as was one of its sequels in 2003.[2]
In March 2006, Dee release Filosofi Kopi: Kumpulan Cerita and Prosa Satu Dekade (Coffee Philosophy: A Decade Worth of Stories and Prose).[1] The collection of short stories and prose dealt with themes of love and spirituality and was described by literary critic and poet Goenawan Mohamad as being 'Uncomplicated, in fact quite brilliant...' Mohamad went on to suggest that it would revive 'wit' in Indonesian literature.[1] At the same time, she released her first solo album, Out of Shell; the album had been in development since 1994.[1]
Two years later, Dee released Rectoverso, a 'hybrid' of an album and a short story collection.[3] The project started in 2006 when she wrote the song 'Hanya Isyarat' ('Only a Sign') and, unsatisfied, wrote a short story with the 'same theme and inspiration'; from this seemingly different but 'actually one and complementary' arrangement, she derived the title.[3] One of the songs, 'Malaikat Juga Tahu' ('Angels Also Know'), was released as a single to warm reception.[4] That year also saw her novel Perahu Kertas (Paper Boats) published.[5]
In 2011 Dee released another collection, Madre (Mother), which was inspired by her hobby of cooking; madre is also a kind of yeast used in cooking.[2] The following year she released the fourth installment in her Supernova series, Partikel. During the writing process she researched various themes, including shamanism, ethnobotany, entheogen, crop circles and extraterrestrials. In an interview with The Jakarta Post, she said that in writing the book she had voice her 'concerns about the environment, such as the destructive course we are taking and the future of humanity on this planet'.[5]
The first film adaptations of one of Dee's novels, Perahu Kertas 1 and Perahu Kertas 2 (both from her novel Perahu Kertas) were released in 2012. The romance films starred Maudy Ayunda and Adipati Dolken. Although originally envisioned as a single work (originally five hours long), director Hanung Bramantyo and the production crew split the two, hoping to keep the mystery of whether or not the protagonists would unite.[6] Dee worked closely with Bramantyo and his wife Zaskia Adya Mecca during the filmmaking process, helping with the casting and writing the screenplay.[5]
The second adaptation of her works, Madre, was released in 2013. As the source work was a short story collection, the film, directed by Benni Setiawan and starring Didi Petet, Vino G. Bastian, and Laura Basuki, was expanded to add more content.[7] In an interview, Dee stated that, though the film worked as a romantic comedy, she found it had undergone 'fairly crucial changes' ('perubahan cukup krusial') during the adaptation process, leading her to feel something was lacking.[8] Film critic JB Kristanto was more vocal: he wrote that the melodramatic adaptation was a 'soap opera brought to the big screen' ('sinetron versi layar lebar').[9]
As of 2012 Plans are underway for film adaptions of Rectoverso and Filosofi Kopi, as well as a fifth instalment of Supernova.[5]
Themes and inspirations[edit]
![Dewi lestari malaikat juga tahu Dewi lestari malaikat juga tahu](https://cirsucetcu.tk/photo/955626.jpg)
Dee often touches on themes of religion in her songs and writings.[1] She notes that spirituality is her 'driving force', but has said that she says 'no' to religion.[1] She has also touched on environmentalism.[1] Poet Sitok Srengenge writes that Dee 'offers unique and complex themes in each of her works, delivering her message with a smart and fresh narrative'.[2] She has been grouped with the sastra wangi (literally 'fragrant literature') literary movement.[10]
Dee has cited American author Ana Castillo as inspiring her to write short stories, as they are not always the same length.[1] Dee enjoys the works of fellow Indonesian writers Sapardi Djoko Damono, Seno Gumira Ajidarma, and Ayu Utami.[1] She has also read philosophical works by Ken Wilber, Friedrich Nietzsche, Emanuel Kant and Martin Heidegger.[1]
In a 2012 interview, Dee said that she works perhaps three months a year, using the time to do her research and write. Of the writing process, she stated 'it’s always the result of collaboration between seeds of ideas and my own willingness to work on it. So if one day I stop doing what I'm doing, perhaps that same dynamic won’t take place anymore'.[5]
Personal life[edit]
Dee married Marcell Siahaan, a fellow singer; together they have a son.[1] They sometimes collaborated on writing songs.[1] However, in 2008 they divorced; later that year Dee married holistic healer Reza Gunawan.[4][11] In 2009 the couple announced their first child, who was born through an unassisted home birthing procedure.[12][11]
Dee says that her 'perception about religion is probably different from other people's'.[1] Although she was raised a Christian, she has also studied Buddhism and Kabbalah; she notes that she realized that God could be found outside of religious institutions when she followed a sunset from church to a railroad yard.[1] She is heavily against fundamentalism, stating that fundamentalists 'are crazy'.[1]
Dee is a practitioner of yoga and meditation.[2] She has been a vegetarian since 2006.[2]

This album has eleven songs, each song has a “twin”, a short story belongs to Rectoverso the book. Both music and book complete one another. It is a concept that puts Rectoverso in such unique position. A hybrid between music and literature.
As a music production, Rectoverso left a historical mark as the first live recording album in Indonesia using all Indonesian local musicians. Previously, the similar orchestra live recording albums always used foreign musicians, recorded in studios abroad. Rectoverso was supported by 46 Indonesian musicians with two arrangers, Andi Rianto and Ricky Lionardi.
Dee wrote all ten songsherself, and another song in collaboration with Erwin Gutawa. Dee performed two duet numbers with Arina Mocca for Aku Ada (I’m Here) and with Aqi Alexa for Peluk (The Last Embrace). Among ten songs, two were written in English: Grow A Day Older and Back To Heaven’s Light.
Rectoverso had at least three hit singles that made into top radio charts. Based on her performance in Malaikat Juga Tahu, Dee was nominated in AMI Award 2009 for Best Pop Female Singer and Most Favorite Female Singer category.
The movie
Rectoverso is an omnibus of five short filmsmade by five female directors, adapted from five short stories written by Dee Lestari.
The fragment of Malaikat Juga Tahu (An Angel Would Know) was a story revolved around an autistic grown-man Abang (Lukman Sardi) and his mother whom he called Bunda (Dewi Irawan). The conflict started when Abang and his younger brother, Hans (Marcell Domits), fell in love with same woman, Leia (Prisia Nasution).
In the fragment of Cecak Di Dinding (Gecko On The Wall), a passionate encounter happened between Saras (Sophia Latjuba) and Taja (Yama Carlos). Although it was a brief relationship, Taja was head over heel over Saras. But, Saras disappeared when she found out that Taja had real feelings for her. Years after, Taja was heartbroken for the second time when he discovered that Saras was about to marry his best friend, Irwan (Tio Pakusadewo).
In Firasat (Intuition), Senja (Asmirandah) felt troubled with her clairvoyant ability that often invited nightmares, she could only cried it out to her mother (Widyawati). Senja had joined a group called The Intuition Club led by Panca (Dwi Sasono). A charming guy and a clairvoyant himself, Panca tried to console Senja so she could be at ease with her ability. Senja couldn’t tell him what was really troubling her; her love to Panca and an premonition that she would lose him forever.
In the fragment of Curhat Buat Sahabat (A Heartfelt Story For My Bestfriend), the story focused on the platonic relationship between two friends, Amanda (Acha Septriasa) and Reggie (Indra Birowo). While Reggie remained single for a long time, Amanda had uncountable relationships with various types of men. She always ended up with someone who would hurt her, and then pouring her heart out to Reggie, not knowing Reggie was the only man who had ever truly loved her.
The fragment Hanya Isyarat (Merely Signs) began with Al’s (Amanda Soekasah) trip to Bali where sheencountered a group of backpackers: Tano (Fauzi Baadila), Bayu (Rangga Djoned), Dali (Prianggadi Adiyatama), and Raga (Hamish Daud Wylie). Al was attracted to Raga but always tried to keep her distance. One night, they held a competition. Each person had to tell the saddest story, and the winner won a bottle of beer. Al finally had a chance to share about her unrequited love.
